This major documentary ran for two series on BBC1, presented by the award-winning journalist and broadcaster Kate Adie.

The majority of us are lucky enough to know our dates of birth, where we were born and who our families are. But there are people who have grown up without such knowledge and who have spent their lives seeking their true identity. The first five programmes covered the heart-breaking stories of ten different and rare individuals who were abandoned at birth, known as "foundlings". They ranged from a new-born baby found in an Edinburgh park in August 2005, to a 78 year old former soldier, who was abandoned in 1927, and has spent his entire life in search of his family.

In the second series, a further ten people told of their remarkable quests to discover their identities. A teenager adopted by British parents from a Romanian orphange after the 1989 revolution, returned to find the mother who had been forced to give him up as a baby. Their astonishing reunion came about purely by chance. Other stories included two retired men from Edinburgh, close friends for over fifty years without realising that they were half-brothers, and a woman approaching her sixtieth birthday hoping to find her family, and understand what became of the mother who had abandoned her as a toddler on the streets of Dublin.
